The paper industry, especially the production of brown paper, in it wastewater
effluent contains of BOD, COD and Colors that need to be processed. The purpose of
this study was to determine the percentage and reduce the concentration of pollutant
loads in the effluent of wastewater, to make it more environmental friendly. The
method is Slow Sand Filter type of filtration, using filter media the result from
burning coal its called bottom ash. Variations in size of bottom ash diameter were
0.85-1.00 mm, 1.10-1.50 mm, and 1.60-2.00 mm, and variation in time detention was
1.5 hours and 3 hours.
The results obtained by this study showed that this processing was able
significantly to reduce levels of BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand), COD
(Chemical Oxygen Demand), and Color. The percentage reduction in levels of BOD,
COD, and Color reached 74.81%; 80.71%; and 99.7% -99.8% by the filtration
process using 1.60-2.00mm bottom ash media. In general, the greater size of bottom
ash that had used and the longer time detention it was, then the percentage reduction
of BOD, COD, and Color got more higher to removed the concentration.
