PENURUNAN KONSENTRASI TSS DAN COD AIR LIMBAH PENCUCIAN KENDARAAN BERMOTOR DI KELURAHAN SAWOJAJAR, KOTA MALANG MENGGUNAKAN METODE BIOFILTER-FITOREMEDIASI

Abstract

The increase of population is in line with the increase of vehicle. This is an opportunity
for the emersion of vehicle washing services. Vehicle washing wastewater contains high concentrations of
TSS and COD so if its discharged directly into the environment can damage the balance of the aquatic
environment. Based on these conditions, an effort to decontaminate wastewater is using a combination of
biofilter and phytoremediation treatment.This study aims to analyze the ability of biofilter-
phytoremediation method in the treatment of vehicle washing wastewater to decrease the concentration of
TSS and COD.
The wastewater used in this study is vehicle washing wastewater from one of the washing places
in Sawojajar, Malang City. The dependent variable used is the concentration of TSS and COD while the
independent variable used is the type of biofilter media, that is PVC and PET media. In phytoremediation
treatment, contact times were applied is 2, 4, and 6 days with a different amount of plants, is 40 plants and
50 plants. The phytoremediator used was Kiambang plant (Salvinia sp.) because it has hyperaccumulator
and high absorption properties.

The results showed that the combination of biofilter and phytoremediation was able to reduce the
concentration of TSS and COD with a percentage 92.55% and 85.32% using PET media and 50 plants for
6 days.
