Abstract

High indoor humidity is a common issue in subsidized housing in tropical regions, particularly in compact dwellings with limited ventilation, such as 6 × 10 m housing units. Excessive humidity negatively affects indoor air quality, building durability, and occupants’ health. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a natural dehumidification approach using Platycerium bifurcatum (staghorn fern) in controlling indoor humidity in subsidized housing. The research employed an experimental method with before-and-after measurements of indoor relative humidity, conducted under controlled occupancy and ventilation conditions. Humidity levels were monitored using digital hygrometers over a defined observation period to assess changes resulting from the application of the plant. The results indicate that the integration of Platycerium bifurcatum contributes to a measurable reduction in indoor humidity levels, improving thermal comfort and indoor environmental quality without additional energy consumption. This natural dehumidification strategy offers a low-cost, energy-efficient, and environmentally adaptive solution suitable for subsidized housing in tropical climates. The findings support the application of nature-based solutions in residential design and contribute to sustainable housing development aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action)
